Network outage in Allmandring III 26C

Since 02:25 tonight, both switches in building 26C are no longer accessible. We will send a volunteer member there as soon as possible.

  • Probably due to age, the fiber optic cables fell off the welded connectors in the cabinet in a chain reaction. As a result, the switches failed one after the other tonight. A recent investment by Selfnet has now paid off very well. We recently got our own fiber optic splicing device. With it, the problem could be repaired at short notice in an emergency solution. Without our own device, the outage could have continued until after the weekend. We will now order new material and then install the cable properly again, so that it will hopefully work again for 20 years.

  • We were able to reconnect the switches to our network. More information will follow. The internet is working again now.

  • In the meantime, we were able to take a closer look at the problem. The hardware installed in the building does not cause a problem. However, there is no link on the fiber from our server room. We are now diagnosing in more detail whether the problem is with the fiber optics or the cable.

  • A first restart of the hardware in the building showed no improvement. We must therefore go into the problem search more precisely. However, this will only be possible towards the afternoon or evening.

    Network failure in dormitory Fabrikstraße

The dormitory Fabrikstraße has a network failure. We will have a volunteer look at it as soon as we can arrange it. It currently looks like a power outage at the switches or a fiber cut between Fabrikstraße and the university.

  • The Fabrikstraße dormitory runs via the Rossneckar site by default, as we have a considerably higher speed there. As a backup, however, there is also an adequate connection directly at Fabrikstraße.

The connection from Rossneckar (both Internet and the connection to Fabrikstraße) runs past the construction site of the new university campus in Esslingen. However, this connection must be rerouted. We have planned this for a long time and have procured a replacement line for the Rossneckar dormitory during the reconstruction. This also works and was therefore not affected by the cable rerouting that started today.

However, the backup line, which goes directly to Fabrikstraße, has had problems of a technical nature. As a result, the tunnel to our site in Vaihingen did not work. That is why the traffic did not automatically switch to the backup link today when the line to Rossneckar was cut. Since we need the backup line only very rarely due to a network of several switches in the Rossneckar to several switches in the Fabrickstraße, the problem was not noticed before. However, we were able to solve the problem. Since approx. 12:05 the Fabrikstraße is again supplied with Internet. As soon as the cable rerouting to Rossneckar is completed, we will then also have a functioning second connection, so that the next time there is a problem with devices in Rossneckar, Fabrickstraße should not be affected.

  • We are lucky. A volunteer will probably still be on site during the day today and not just in the evening, as is often the case with volunteers. We hope that he will be able to fix the problem immediately. However, since we cannot yet pinpoint the exact problem, it is difficult to make a prognosis.
